The Assembly Project Inspires Innovation and Collaboration at Pitt

The University of Pittsburgh continues to forge ahead in developing a groundbreaking biomedical research hub, The Assembly – located at 5051 Centre Avenue and inspired by the historic Ford Motor Company Assembly Plant that once filled the building – and the Planning, Design and Real Estate team has been busy.

The project will advance the University’s mission by supporting biomedical research, collaboration and innovation. The eight-story state-of-the-art facility, encompassing over 200,000 square feet will include research lab space, a 250+ seat auditorium, galleries and event space.

The Assembly team recently enjoyed a topping-off ceremony where the final beam of construction was put into place.

“Projects like The Assembly shine as a beacon,” Matthew Rendulic, Assistant Director of Real Estate Development said. “Both internally, and to showcase to others outside of Pitt our commitment to research – and it really starts with a facility such as this.”

While Planning, Design and Real Estate are at the forefront of major projects laddering up through the University’s campus and institutional master plans, these projects pull together the commitment of talent and additional resources at Pitt to bring it to life.

Assembly’s partnerships within the University with partner Wexford include the School of Medicine, Pitt Mobility, General Counsel, Facilities Management, Purchasing, Pay and Travel, and Community and Governmental Relations – just to name a few.

It’s a wide net, and a team effort utilizing all of the expertise that the University has for a project like this to be successful.

The Assembly is cited as one of the largest projects in the region, slated to open in the first quarter of 2022.

In the early teens it was the Ford Motor Company plant. Fast forward 100 plus years, and it’s the site of world-class innovation…yet again.
